Next Up, “Beer Garden Pro-Wrestling”

July 28, 2010

With Sumo Hall now behind us, DDT will take it easy for the first week in August and the fans are invited to join in the fun. DDT will be hosting its “Beer Garden Pro-Wrestling” event, which is a week long period of shows held in Shin-Kiba 1st RING. The big appeal for everyone attending the shows is the food stalls run by the wrestlers while the matches take place, plus the plentiful amounts of beer available too. Each day the show is dedicated to a different DDT wrestler or group of wrestlers. The cards for each show often have some unique matches on display plus some surprising and unexpected appearances. Highlights from each night will be shown on an upcoming episode of DDT’s weekly Samurai TV show, Dramatic Fantasia.

Hikaru Sato In AJPW, Omega To SMASH, Sawa To EVOLVE (Into Sawasaur)

July 27, 2010

A brief note on a few outside adventures featuring DDT related talent. Hikaru Sato is currently taking part in All Japan Pro Wrestling for their annual Jr. Heavyweight League. He is already onto a good start in the competition, pinning Hiroshi Yamato in their bout with a German Suplex to win 2 points in Block A. That show was held in Korakuen Hall and took place on the same day as DDT’s Peter Pan show in Sumo Hall. Sato’s next match takes place today in Saitama and his opponent is the AJPW Jr. Heavyweight ChampionKaz Hayashi.

Kenny Omega will make his debut for Tajiri’s SMASH promotion on the 30th August in Shinjuku FACE. He will take on another Canadian wrestler, Mentallo, who has been a familiar face (er… mask) to SMASH fans since the promotion’s first show back in March.

Finally KO-D Tag Team Champion, Munenori Sawa will make a trip back to the US in September for the fifth EVOLVE show. He will be in the main event taking on Bryan Danielson in a match I am really excited to see take place.

Some early notes from the show:

The attendence for this show is said to be 8,800 fans, which is another great success for DDT. So much so that the annual Sumo Hall show is here to stay with the next one planned for 24th July, 2011. The arena was said to be 60% full by the time the dark match began. The show opened with an appearance by the former ring announcer for New Japan, Kero Tanaka who joined Michael Nakazawa as they watched footage from last year’s event of Nakazawa’s backside exploding. The Wild Snake team were at odds during the Tag Gauntlet and the pairing of Posion Sawada JULIE and Manabu Nakanishi eventually fell apart with JULIE casting his snake magic on his own partner! Kota Ibushi made an appearance at intermission and wished his B.F.F. Kenny Omega the best of luck for his match against Naomichi Marufuji. Despite being victorious, Marufuji suffered an arm injury during the bout and had it taped up as soon as the match ended. After Danshoku Dino’s victory over HG & RG, Dino asked HG if he really was ready to retire. They were interruped by a video message by Genichiro Tenryu, who urged HG to continue wrestling. HG decided not to retire and made out with Dino to celebrate. With the KO-D Openweight title back round his waist, HARASHIMA is now a 4-time holder of the title.

YOSHIHIKO Manga Incoming!

July 23, 2010

For a place as crazy as DDT, you’d think the place would be a great setting for a manga. Well, it turns out that there is one. Over the last year, a series of comics about several DDT wrestlers have been created to sell at shows. The comics are drawn by Kuni Harada, who was behind a popular manga series in the 1980s called Wrestling Superstar Retsuden. Now the latest volume of the DDT Retsuden series is unveiled. The subject for this comic is the blow-up doll sensation, YOSHIHIKO!  The comic is priced at 1,000円 and will be available this Sunday at DDT’s Sumo Hall show. Previous volumes have been about Kota Ibushi, HARAHSIMA, Poison Sawada JULIE and Danshoku Dino, who had two volumes dedicated to him.

Riho & Mr. #6 Find New Partner, Campsite Pro Wrestling Returns

July 22, 2010

Riho & Mr. #6’s new tag team partner for Sumo Hall will be the boss of Big Japan, the Great Kojika. It hasn’t been long since Kojika last wrestled in the Ryogoku. He appeared in a Battle Royal for Masahiro Chono’s 25th Anniversary show in October 2009 and is fresh off of defeating recently lost to GENTARO at the Freedoms show in Korakuen Hall from a month ago. So now we have a 68 year old man teaming with a 12 year old girl and an 8 year old masked boy.

Looking ahead to the future after Sumo Hall, the next DDT show to look forward too will be their annual visit to the Yamanashi Natureland park for the Campsite Pro Wrestling show. The event will be held on the 12th September and so far Sanshiro Takagi is announced to compete.

Help Out Masa Takanashi

July 22, 2010
One of the most enjoyable aspects of DDT is finding talent in some of the most unlikely people. Much like the original ECW, DDT’s roster is made up of odd folk, misfits and people who look out of place just by standing inside the wrestling ring, let alone competing in one. But appearances can be deceiving and you never know just how talented someone can be by just looking at them. Masa Takanashi is one such person. A dropout of the Toryumon wrestling school, Masa debuted in 2003 and was a low carder for most of his career. In DDT he slowly climbed up the ranks and started to establish himself (and his French cousin) in a feud with the Italian Four Horsemen. Earlier this yeat, Masa pulled off the performance of his life in an attempt to win the KO-D Openweight title from Daisuke Sekimoto. The match earned rave reviews and could be considered a genuine Match Of The Year Candidate. Unfortunately, shortly after that match, Masa suffered a serious injury to his right knee, putting him on the shelf indefinitly. Over in Japan, the DDT gang have done some fundraisers to help pay for Masa’s medical bills. That’s when my fellow Irish puro addict and all round good egg Alan4L came up with an idea. I’ll let him explain the rest:
ok lads, here’s the dealio.

As you all may or may not know, DDT wrestler Masa Takanashi suffered a very serious knee injury a couple of weeks back. It came shortly after he gave us one of the better matches of the year in wrestling when he wrestled DDT champ Daisuke Sekimoto.

Well, as would be expected with a guy from DDT who isn’t a major star, Takanashi isn’t exactly rolling in money. Unfortunately his surgery and other medical bills are as costly as you may think and he just plain can’t afford them. DDT have done some fundraisers for fans in Japan to help, and I believe they’ve been a nice boost. However there’s still a ways to go.

I figured that fans on this side of the world who were fans of Masa, DDT, or puro in general might want the opportunity to help also. I’ve been in touch with Michael Nakazawa about this, and he said it would be absolutely amazing and Takanashi would be bowled over by the thought of US and European fans helping him.

A paypal account will be setup and 100% of the proceeds (obviously) will go to Masa.

Thanks guys!

So let’s help Masa out. Also, when you donate choose “gift” on the options. Thank you for helping.
