2. World’s Strongest Ganbare☆Tag Tournament – Semi Final: Ken Ohka & Ganbare The Great defeated Yukihiro Abe & Keisuke Ishii when Ohka pinned Abe with the Fire Spear (16:11).
3. I Will Not Give Up Tag Tournament – Semi Final: Mitomi Masayuki & Shibata defeated Yumehito Imanari & Bambi when Masayuki pinned Imanari with the Salty Splash (6:40).
4. I Will Not Give Up Tag Tournament – Semi Final: Shuichiro Katsumura & Takafumi Ito defeated Nobuhiro Tsurumaki & Chikara when Katsumura submitted Chikara with a Jumping Crucifix Armbreaker (8:37).
5. I Will Not Give Up Tag Tournament – Final: Nobuhiro Tsurumaki & Chikara defeated Yumehito Imanari & Bambi when Chikara pinned Imanari with the Saber Chop (5:45).
6. World’s Strongest Ganbare☆Tag Tournament – Final: Kenso Ohka & KAZMA SAKAMOTO defeated Ken Ohka & Ganbare The Great when Kenso Ohka submitted Ken Ohka with a Figure Four Leg Lock (17:32).

The second show of the day featured the remaining rounds of the World’s Strongest Ganbare☆Tag Tournament. It began with Ken Ohka & Ganbare The Great entering the ring to the Big Japan theme song. Ohka wondered why they were using that music. Ganbare said he chose the song because they were taking part in a big Japanese pro wrestling show. The song played again when they left the ring and the crowd chanted “Dai Nippon!” at them.

In the semi-finals Shin Ganbare☆Wrestling eliminated Shinichiro Tominaga & Hi69 while Ohka & Ganbare advanced over Yukihiro Abe & Keisuke Ishii. In the final, KAZMA SAKAMOTO unmasked Ganbare, revealing that it really was Minoru Fujita under the mask. Kenso Ohka targeted Ken Ohka’s leg effectively enough for him to tap out to a Figure Four Leg Lock. Kenso complained that there was no trophy then praised SAKAMOTO for being best, kindest tag wrestler ever. When they left, Ken Ohka called for Fujita to come over to him. Fujita put his mask back on and went back to his Ganbare character. Ohka admitted he knew it was Fujita all along and that their defeat was not his fault. Ohka said he has never won a tournament but more opportunities will come along. He then joked that Fujita can go to over Big Japan. Fujita threatened to quit instead even though he doesn’t know why he would do that.

A second tournament took place throughout the show but this one was done using Losers Advance rules. I Will Not Give Up Tag Tournament featured all of the teams that were eliminated in Round 1. Both Enjo-gun and Shuichiro Katsumura & Takafumi Ito won their matches so they survived the embarrassment of being in the final. That went to the teams of Yumehito Imanari & Bambi and Nobuhiro Tsurumaki & Chikara. Chikara overcame his hesitation to hit Bambi to win the match, using as many Saber Chops as his heart desired. Imanari & Bambi were “rewarded” with the title of Weakest Team. Imanari blamed Bambi for their failure because she recently lost weight. To make up for this Imanari challenged Bambi to a Double Sweet Death Match in Osaka on 30th April. Imanari wants to fill Bambi with 15,000 calories of candy!

newyear2016

Korakuen Hall spent its final hours of 2016 hosting the annual New Year’s Supershow co-hosted by Big Japan, DDT, K-DOJO, WRESTLE-1 and All Japan. The entire show was built around a Shuffle Tag Team Tournament, mixing most of the wrestlers together into odd pairings. Some teams got along with each other, some didn’t but hey it’s the holidays so let’s just have fun.

newyear2016-a

The opening match saw Yukio Sakaguchi & Daichi Hashimoto barely working together to beat the Brahman Brothers. Even the evil twins suggested that their opponents would have a better chance of winning if they got along. That came back to haunt them when a stop sign attack backfired and Brahman Shu hit Brahman Kei by accident. Hashimoto then drank the Brahman’s black ink and spat it in Kei’s face, leading to the Shining Wizard to finish him off.

newyear2016-b

Kengo Mashimo & Shigehiro Irie beat Naoya Nomura & Kouki Iwasaki. The latter worked well together but they weren’t able to outlast their more experienced opponents. Irie isolated Iwasaki while Mashimo threw Nomura out of the ring. Iwasaki said he felt tense having to wrestle on the final night of the year.

newyear2016-c

The 3rd match ended in a sleazy manner thanks to Joey Ryan and Laura James. Ryan kept trying to make Yuko Miyamoto touch his groin. Referee Frank Atsushi was slammed into the turnbuckles so James ran in to interfere. This somehow led to a situation where Great Kojika was knocked onto his back, James fell down on top of him sitting on his face, Atsushi stood over her holding his groin in pain and Ryan was knocked down head first onto Kojika’s crotch. If that wasn’t enough, a dazed Miyamoto was holding a Samurai! TV camera standing over them like he was filming a porn scene. Miyamoto eventually fell on top of them for the winning pin.

newyear2016-d

The next odd couple team to come along was Yuji Okabayashi & Jiro Kuroshio. Okabayashi had not time for Kuroshio’s antics and just wanted to wrestle. Kuroshio however wanted to know if Okabayashi had a fancy jacket to match his own. He found one and offered it to Okabayashi after they beat Ayato Yoshida & Takuya Nomura but it was refused.

newyear2016-e

Daisuke Sekimoto & HARASHIMA Vs Kazusada Higuchi & Yoshihisa Uto was the first match of the night to end in a Time Limit Draw. From there the match went into sudden death 1 count fall rules. HARASHIMA and Higuchi sprinted to pin each other for just one second but neither could. It took Uto to get the upset pin on Sekimoto to win the match and knock out one-half of last year’s tournament winners in the first round.

newyear2016-f

The pairing of Sanshiro Takagi & Abdullah Kobayashi were going by the team name GET MILD. They both came out dressed in Takayuki Ueki’s old wrestling costumes with a guiding stick poking out of Takagi’s crotch. Everybody including Manabu Soya pulled out a gun during the match and dared each other to a Western showdown. But it was all a trick, Soya & Ueki both rolled over GET MILD when they turned their backs and got the three count.

newyear2016-g

Daisuke Sasaki & Yuki Sato Vs Atsushi Aoki & Kazuki Hashimoto was the next match to go into overtime. It was part of Sasaki & Sato’s plan to waste time by bringing out selfie sticks and playing around with them. Aoki jammed the stick into Sasaki’s groin then tapped out Sato with the Cross Armbreaker.

newyear2016-h

The final first round match featured Danshoku Dino trying to woo his Kaz Hayashi into being his partner in more ways than one. Hayashi eventually reciprocated and revealed he was wearing Danshoku tights under his own. Unfortunately the power of love wasn’t enough to beat Hideyoshi Kamitani & Konosuke Takeshita.

newyear2016-i

Round 2 began with Sakaguchi & Hashimoto on better terms. They needed to be if they wanted to beat Mashimo & Irie. They hit a Penalty Kick/Shining Wizard combo to Irie then Sakaguchi hit the Right Knee Of God for the three count. A handshake at the end cemented that they were now on the right page together.

newyear2016-j

The other disgruntled pairing of the tournament also finally got along. Kuroshio convinced Okabayashi to wear his fancy jacket along with a sun visor with a wig attached to it. He got into the spirit of things and did some Ikemen poses while wrestling. Their match with Yankee Two Kenju went into overtime and sadly the Ikemen dream ended badly. Isami Kodaka caught Kuroshio in a European Clutch for the one count.

newyear2016-k

Ueki had a crazy plan to beat Higuchi & Uto. It involved drinking out of a 1.5 litre bottle of Coca-Cola then tightrope walking across the top rope. What he was supposed to achieve I don’t know but he wound up slipping and crotching himself on the rope. Higuchi then pinned him with the Doctor Bomb.

newyear2016-l

Kamitani & Takeshita were the last team to qualify for the semi-final with a win over Aoki & Hashimoto. Aoki took out Takeshita with a Topé but in the ring Hashimoto was pinned by Kamitani’s Back Drop.

newyear2016awards

With the 2nd Round completed it was time for the 2016 Occupation Of The Indies Awards. Best Newcomer was given to Takuya Nomura from Big Japan. Nomura said he debuted in April and will do his best to meet everyone’s expectations. Best Show went to Ganbare☆Wrestling for “BAD COMMUNICATION 2016” held on 2nd October. Ken Ohka was there to accept the award but had to leave early to participate at “SHOTA AID” in Shin-Kiba later that night. Ohka said he eventually wants to book a show at the Tokyo Dome. Best Unit went to DAMNATION from DDT. Shuji Ishikawa celebrated by singing “Only One Flower In The World” by SMAP. He then got angry at the rest of DAMNATION for not joining in. Best Bout went to the Scaffold G Shock Death Match between Ryuji Ito Vs Kokuro Hoshino from Big Japan’s “RYOGOKUTAN” show on 24th July. Ito wasn’t happy that he lost the match but would take the award as commiseration. Finally the MVP Award went to Shuji Ishikawa. At 41 years old he would like to fight new wrestlers and win new championships.

newyear2016-m

A lottery was held to determine the semi-final match ups. First up was Kamitani & Takeshita Vs Sakaguchi & Hashimoto. Once again Kamitani’s Back Drop was the difference maker. Sakaguchi admitted he misunderstood Hashimoto at first but got to know him throughout the night in their matches. He thinks they will meet again some day.

newyear2016-n

2016 ended and 2017 begun during the Higuchi & Uto Vs Yankee Two Kenju match. Kodaka & Miyamoto both celebrated by diving out of the ring onto their opponents at the stroke of midnight. Uto claimed the first victory of the new year but giving Kodaka a Double Arm Facebuster followed by a Lariat. Miyamoto coped with defeat by grabbing the Samurai! TV camera again.

newyear2016-o

So the final was Kamitani & Takeshita Vs Higuchi & Uto in a Big Japan/DDT Vs DNA/Big Japan final. With no time limit a winner would be determined under normal circumstances. Late in the match Higuchi hit Takeshita with a Lariat but only got a one count. Kamitani blocked Higuchi from doing the Doctor Bomb but Uto got rid of him. That allowed Higuchi to give Takeshita the Goten to pin last year’s co-champion and win the tournament! Higuchi & Uto praised their opponents but they were the strongest tonight. Takeshita said he is the one who will lead DDT and he then stood up to Higuchi. In reply Higuchi said he will not lose. Kamitani said he he will lead the entire pro wrestling landscape. Uto calmed everyone down and encouraged everyone to lead pro wrestling in Japan together. The four congratulated one another and posed for the show ending photographs.

The chairman of the Yokohama Shopping Street Federation that sponsors the Yokohama Shopping Street 6-Man Tag Team Titles was pleased with the main event. He described it as pure pro wrestling at its very best, which is very good. FUMA said Abdullah Kobayashi’s bald head reminds him of Rob Halford from Judas Priest and Piet Sielck from Iron Savior. Kobayashi didn’t know who they were and asked if they are Japanese. FUMA then apologised to the fans for IRON PRIEST’s failure to win the titles. He said IRON PRIEST will impregnate the pro wrestling world with heavy metal. “Thorns and chains to the soft heart! KEEP ON ROCKIN’ Heavy Metal Anthem! We are IRON PRIEST!”

SAGAT was focused on beating Trans-Am ★ Hiroshi in the Hardcore Tag Match but it was not meant to be. Hiroshi stopped the Goregrind with a Spinebuster onto a Ladder. The Perfect Plex afterwards was the end for SAGAT. Hiroshi rubbed in his victory by saying how fun it is to wrestle in a variety of matches. He then challenged SAGAT to a singles match on 30th August. However Takumi Tsukamoto stepped in and demanded to be in the match too. It was decided that a 3 Way Match will take place instead.

NPO Kumamoto Wrestling, Big Japan and DDT got together for a special charity wrestling event held outside Sun Road New Town Arcade. Donations were collected for relief funds that will go to reconstruction efforts around the area.

Both teams in the main event were gifted with watermelons to encourage their match performances. The hometown hero Kota Umeda received a lot of streamers during his ring announcement. A lot of the match focused on him squaring up to all three of his opponents. However despite his efforts in trying to cut down Yuji Okabayashi with kicks, he was defeated with a Lariat and the Golem Splash. Okayabayshi told the crowd he was delighted to wrestle in Kumamoto again and they have an awesome wrestler in Umeda. Konosuke Takeshita told the story of Umeda going home to protect his friends and family when the earthquake struck. When he came back to DDT he was different, a stronger person. He said that when DDT comes back to Kumamoto there is only one person who should get a KO-D Openweight Title shot and that’s Umeda.

newyearcrowd2015

The indie wrestling scene in Japan got together on New Year’s Eve as they always do to celebrate the end of 2015 with a big tag team tournament. While there were a few regular teams involved most were mixed between wrestlers from different organisations.

ueki-bedinn-takagi

The opening match was all about the Bed Inn Girls. They were brought in by Sanshiro Takagi & Takayuki Ueki to support them throughout the tournament and also provide some sleazy entertainment in the process. The Great Kojika wasn’t impressed and he called them old hags. Tetsuya Endo however became excited when they stripped down to their swimsuits. The distraction cost him the match when he missed the Sky Twister Press and Takagi then pinned him with La Magistral Cradle. When asked about the Bed Inn Girls, Kojika said there were more attractive women in the audience. Endo admitted he now learned what his weakness is.

newyeardance

The Brahman Brothers did what they could to stop Kazuki Hirata & Kaji Tomato from dancing because they hate their dance music. They broke the Hirata GO! glasses but replacements were quickly found. Karate Brahman interfered in the match wearing panties and fishnet stockings but he wound up dancing with Hirata & Tomato. The Brahmans then soaked their opponents with water and went on to win the match.

miyamoto-higuchi

The DDT site called Kazusada Higuchi & Yoshihisa Uto the Rookie Steroid Duo. HARASHIMA & Yuko Miyamoto were called Yankee Smile. Higuchi was strong enough to handle himself but Uto was overwhelmed and pinned after the Swivel Fire Thunder followed by the Somato. The rookies said they were frustrated by the loss. They would both like to face each other at some point in 2016.

robo-numazawa

Jaki Numazawa fainted after Match #4 ended in a Time Limit Draw forcing Antonio Honda to start overtime on his own. Numazawa returned as Robocop but could not make a difference. Honda fell to the Cactus Flower and they were eliminated. Honda explained the Robocop plan. Who would win a fight between Robocop and a pro wrestler? Robocop of course! Works in theory but not in practice.

danshoku-kobayashi

Danshoku Dino introduced himself & Yuji Okabayashi as a team of homos. Okabayashi kept denying the claims. When Dino gave Abdullah Kobayashi the Lip Lock it awakened Kobayashi’s Danshoku powers. They both applied the Lip Lock on Tank Nagai then encouraged Okabayashi to do the same. Okabayashi refused and knocked out both of them. Dino fell on top of Kobayashi so it counted as a pin. Nagai’s new wife Mio Shirai wasn’t happy to learn that his face was shoved up Dino’s backside. She’s not going to kiss him after that!

double-torture-rack

Hideyoshi Kamitani showed some fire by stepping up to Konosuke Takeshita and the two were scrambling for the pin in the dying seconds of the match. When overtime took place Kamitani kicked out of a Brianbuster from Takeshita but fell to the same move from Daisuke Sekimoto. The Deadlift German Suplex sealed the deal. Shigehiro Irie was left to rue being eliminated from the first round for the second year in a row.

taka-ito-sekine-kikuta

Match #7 was a sprint that lasted just over 4 minutes. It was the quickest match in Round 1. Kazumi Kikuta almost scored the victory with a Fisherman Suplex on Ryuichi Sekine while TAKA Michinoku had Ryuji Ito in the Just Face Lock. However the tables turned and Ito held TAKA back while Sekine put Kikuta away with the Ryusetsu.

isami-kicks-mashimo

The final match of Round 1 saw Isami Kodaka and Kengo Mashimo struggling to gel as a team. From the moment they entered the ring they were uneasy about teaming together. Some attempts at team work were blown when Kodaka accidentaly kicked Mashimo in the head. The only reason they were able to beat Yukio Sakaguchi & Kazuki Hashimoto was their intense desire to one-up each other and not be the person who took the loss. Sakaguchi took out Kodaka with a Right Knee but Mashimo got the fall on Hashimoto with the Vertical Drop Brainbuster. Mashimo & Kodaka scuffled with each other as they left ringside after the match.

brahman-bedinn

Round 2 began with a messy match between Takagi & Ueki against the Brahman Brothers. The Bed Inn Girls teased Karate Brahman with feathers, a strap and a banana. In his excitement he squeezed a bottle until mysterious liquid squirted out. The Brahmans put a stop to the lewd exhibition by spitting black ink in the faces of the Bed Inn Girls. Ueki became angry and pulled out his gun but he was then crotched onto the top rope and pinned with the Zombie King.

cactusflower-somato

HARASHIMA wore similar Yankee gear as Miyamoto for their second round match. Makoto Oishi had Miyamoto pinned with the Cactus Flower but HARASHIMA cut him off with the Somato. Miyamoto got the three count afterwards. After the match Oishi said he never saw HARASHIMA coming.

danshoku-okabayashi

Okabayashi was announced as “Not a homo” when he and Dino entered the ring to face Sekimoto & Takeshita. Dino kept encouraging Okabayashi to awaken his Danshoku side. Okabayashi got so angry he abandoned Dino and left the match. Later when Dino was overwhelmed by the 2-on-1 disadvantage “Thrill” suddenly played over the speakers. Out came Danshoku Okabayashi! He and Dino double teamed Sekimoto & Takeshita with stereo Danshoku Nightmares. Okabayashi then tried to give Sekimoto the Lip Lock but it was blocked. Sekimoto then gave Dino an Atomic Drop and Takeshita hit a Lariat followed by his own Deadlift German Suplex to advance to the next round. Okabayashi finally got Sekimoto with the Lip Lock after the match and chased him away from ringside.

isami-kicks-mashimo-again

The dodgy teamwork continued for Kodaka & Mashimo. Kodaka once again accidentaly kicked Mashimo in the head during a blown double team spot. Kodaka was able to save their tournament hopes by pinning Sekine with the European Clutch but after the match Mashimo gave his partner a German Suplex.

japan-indie-awards-2015

When Round 2 was completed Samurai! TV and Indie No Oshigoto presented the Japan Indie Awards 2015. The Newcomer Award went to Kazusada Higuchi from DDT, the Best Box Office Award went to Big Japan for their 20th July Sumo Hall show, Best Unit went to #OhkaEmpire and Best Bout was given to Sekimoto Vs Okabayashi from BJW 7/20. Finally the MVP Award was given to Okabayashi.

yankeesmile-brahmans

For the semi finals HARASHIMA & Miyamoto had another costume change. This time Miyamoto was dressed to look more like HARASHIMA. The Brahmans fought clean at the start but soon brought out their usual collection of foreign objects. However Yankee Smile were prepared and used some of the Brahmans’ own spots against them. They blinded the Brahmans with their own black ink and hit their finishers to advance to the final.

slingshot-german-suplex

The clock struck midnight during the second semi-final. Kodaka celebrated by immediately hitting a Tope Suicida. He and Mashimo were finally able to team together with few problems but it wasn’t enough to beat Sekimoto & Takeshita. In a big statement Takeshita pinned Kodaka just days away from their KO-D Openweight Title match. Mashimo was quick to part ways with Kodaka afterwards, only giving a “No comment” in their post-match interview.

takeshita-sekimoto

So the final in the early hours of the morning was HARASHIMA & Yuko Miyamoto Vs Daisuke Sekimoto & Konosuke Takeshita. HARASHIMA wished everyone a “Happy New Year” before hitting a Diving Kung Fu Kick. Takeshita showed his own strength by doing Sekimoto’s Double German Suplex on Sekimoto and HARASHIMA. Miyamoto almost snuck by with the win when he countered Sekimoto’s Deadlift German into a Cradle for a nearfall. But Sekimoto hit the German Suplex on the second attempt while Takeshita wiped out HARASHIMA with the Touchdown onto the apron to end the match. Sekimoto thanked the fans for staying with them throughout the night. Takeshita said it was a special feeling getting to team with Sekimoto. Miyamoto joined in when HARASHIMA did his “Because We Practice!” catchphrase. The show ended with everyone in the tournament getting together inside the ring for the group photo.
